The Film Federation of India (FFI) has opened submissions for India's official entry to the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, formally launching the country's Oscar selection process for the 2027 ceremony.
The FFI will appoint a jury to evaluate eligible submissions before selecting a single film to represent India at the Academy Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has set 30 September 2026 as the deadline for countries to submit their official entries in the Best International Feature Film category.
Eligibility
To be considered for India's official Oscar submission, films must meet the following criteria:
- Have a running time of more than 40 minutes.
- Contain more than 50% non-English dialogue.
- Have been exhibited in a commercial cinema for at least seven consecutive days with paid admission during the Academy's eligibility period.
- Be eligible to represent India under the Film Federation of India's rules.
- Comply with all Academy eligibility requirements for the Best International Feature Film category.
Submission requirements
Producers must submit:
- A completed FFI entry form.
- A copy of the CBFC certificate.
- Proof of the film's theatrical release.
- An English-language synopsis.
- Cast and crew details.
- An English-subtitled screening copy.
- Other supporting documents specified by the FFI.
The FFI's jury will review all eligible entries before announcing India's official submission to the Academy.
India has submitted a film for the Academy Awards' international feature category since 1957. To date, only three Indian films have secured nominations: Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay! (1988) and Lagaan (2001).
